INDEPENDENT SCHOOL,
SPECIAL EDUCATION: ONE AND THE SAME

More than 3,000 children with behavioural challenges, learning difficulties, or other disabilities attend a specialized independent school in Quebec.

Twelve educational institutions that focus on special needs, located in Montreal and Quebec as well as their surrounding regions, cater to these students.

TWELVE INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS THAT FOCUS ON SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACH MORE THAN 3,000 STUDENTS WHO ARE AFFECTED BY A DISABILITY, OR SIGNIFICANT BEHAVIOURAL OR LEARNING DIFFICULTIES.

SPECIALIZED
SCHOOLS

Your child is unique. Find a school that provides a welcoming, engaging environment where your child can flourish and reach their full potential.

The Minister of Education, Recreation, and Sports recommends that young people with disabilities, behavioural challenges, or learning difficulties should be integrated into ordinary classrooms. However, one single form of integration would not provide the ideal solution for all students. It is therefore necessary to consider other approaches – and that is where specialized schools come in.

TO RESPOND TO SPECIFIC NEEDS

The majority of these specialized schools, founded more than 40 years ago, were born of university research projects. Others were created to respond to the needs of parents who were unable to find the necessary resources for their child’s specific needs within the existing education system.

WITH QUALIFIED EXPERTS

Over the years, they developed notable expertise in different areas of special needs schooling, and became an essential piece of Quebec’s education system. Within the context of enrolment agreements with school boards for more than 80% of their clientele, these subsidized schools provide an education at a cost comparable to that of a public school.

DEDICATED STAFF

To understand the clientele, you must visit these schools and witness the exceptional commitment of the 650 team members that make up their staff firsthand: multidisciplinary teams made up of passionate individuals that love children and always take their success and well-being to heart.

These schools set themselves apart not only with the limited number of students per class, but also with the diversity of the specialized, professional individuals that work there. Many of them participate in university research protocols and maintain close ties with the health and employment networks for at-work learning placements.
