PRIVATE AND
INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS

While both private and independent schools offer alternative curriculums to the public system, there are two important differentiating factors: one revolves around funding, and the other has to do with governance.

Private schools are generally understood to be organizations established and controlled by one or more persons.

“Independent” most often signifies a not-for-profit school that is accountable to a board of trustees that operates at arm’s length from the administration. In Quebec, many independent schools receive public funding from the provincial government.

In Quebec, the term “private school” is used to refer to any school that is not part of a school board, regardless of whether they are non-profit or for-profit, and whether or not they receive public funding.

AUTONOMOUS, BUT STANDARDIZED

Independent schools are autonomous. However, they are supervised by the Ministry of Education, and must follow the Québec Education Program. Teachers in this sector must also possess a teaching permit.

DARING TO INNOVATE

Independent schools choose their own staff, develop their own programs and services, and are responsible for their own facilities. This leeway allows them to best respond to their students’ needs and adapt to their community. They are distinguished by their students’ strong sense of belonging, the parents who choose them to educate their children, and the staff and alumni who work together to usher in the future of education.

BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION

Driven by the desire to innovate, independent schools attract professionals that take collaboration and research to heart. They strive for excellence and invest lots of effort in their staff’s ongoing training. They develop initiatives that have a ripple effect on Quebec’s entire educational ecosystem.
